  THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN COORDINATION WITH WESTCHESTER COUNTY

  OFFICE OF EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT PERFORMED A STORM SURVEY IN

  WESTCHESTER COUNTY TODAY. A SERIES OF HEAVY SHOWERS AND

  THUNDERSTORMS PRODUCED DAMAGING THUNDERSTORM WINDS AND TORRENTIAL

  RAIN ON SUNDAY AUGUST 21.

 

  AT CHAPPAQUA…WE VISITED KIPP STREET NEAR THE INTERSECTION OF

  QUAKER ROAD (ROUTE 120) WHICH WAS PARTIALLY CLOSED. IN ADDITION TO

  DOWNED LARGE TREE BRANCHES…THERE WERE AT LEAST 2 LARGE DOWNED

  TREES. PEAK WIND GUSTS WERE ESTIMATED AT 60 TO 70 MPH. STRAIGHT LINE

  WIND DAMAGE OCCURRED.

 

  AT PLEASANTVILLE…WHERE THE MOST SIGNIFICANT THUNDERSTORM WIND

  DAMAGE OCCURRED…PEAK WIND GUSTS WERE ESTIMATED AT 70 TO 80 MPH

  BETWEEN 300 AND 500 WASHINGTON AVENUE. SEVERAL LARGE TREES AND

  BRANCHES WERE DOWNED. A FEW TREE TOPS WERE SNAPPED OFF. DAMAGE TO

  GUTTERS AND BACKYARD DECKS OCCURRED AS A RESULT OF FALLING TREES.

  AT YORKTOWN HEIGHTS…WE VISITED THE SITE ALONG HUNTER BROOK AND

  BAPTIST CHURCH ROADS. TREE BRANCHES AND AT LEAST 1 TREE WERE DOWNED

  BY THUNDERSTORM WINDS…WITH ESTIMATED PEAK GUSTS OF 60 MPH. THIS

  WAS STRAIGHT LINE WIND DAMAGE. THERE WAS NO EVIDENCE OF TORNADIC

  DAMAGE.
