The New York City Long Island Chapter of the American Meteorological Society invites everyone to the Margaret Meed Film Festival, where you can see multiple films for only $12. I am writing on behalf of the Margaret Mead Film Festival at the American Museum of Natural History. This year, from November 10th-13th, the Festival celebrates 35 years as the preeminent showcase for contemporary cultural storytelling. The full lineup can be found at http://www.amnh.org/mead.
Of particular interest is a 69-minute film entitled THE OBSERVERS by Jacqueline Goss. THE OBSERVERS portrays one of the last human-run weather observatories in two different seasons. Extreme and unpredictable, the land and sky of Mount Washington, New Hampshire form a varying frame for two observers as they go about the solitary work of measuring and recording the weather. THE OBSERVERS is based on the actual work of the crew of the Mount Washington Weather Observatory — one of the oldest weather stations in North America where staff members have taken hourly readings of the wind speed, visibility, barometric pressure, and temperature since 1932. In April of 1934, observers measured a wind gust of 231 mph, which remains a world record for a surface station.
THE OBSERVERS will be screened at 7:00PM on Friday, November 11, 2011. The Filmmaker, Jacqueline Goss, will be present at the screening.
If you wish to extend the evening’s entertainment, additional films will be screened before and after THE OBSERVERS. For example, THE OBSERVERS will be preceded by PLANET KIRSAN (6:00PM) about a chess curriculum in elementary schools in the Republic of Kalmykia. THE OBSERVERS will be followed by SPACE TOURISTS (8:00PM) about the recent development of commercial space travel.
